US New Home Sales report september 26 2012

US New Home Sales report september 26 2012 : In the US, New Home Sales, Value the annualized number of new homes that were sold on the previous month; 381K is expected now from 372K on August.

Later in the US, Crude Oil Inventories, weekly report to measure the  commercial crude oil barrels that are held in inventory, 8.5M is due similar to the last week. Sales of new homes likely rose again in August, further evidence of a sustained recovery in housing.

The expectation was that sales of new homes increased to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 380,000 in August, according to a survey by FactSet. The Commerce Department will release the report at 10 a.m. EDT.

In July, sales of new homes had increased 3.6 percent to an annual rate of 372,000, matching the May level. Both months were the highest since April 2010 when housing sales were being boosted by temporary government tax credits for home buyers.

In the 12 months through July, sales of new homes were up 25 percent. But even with the increases, new home sales remain well below the annual pace of 700,000 that economists consider healthy.

The house market is making a modest but steady recovery, helped by the Federal Reserve's efforts to give the economy a boost through lower interest rates. The Fed earlier this month announced a third round of bond buying in an effort to stimulate the economy and attack unemployment which has been stuck above 8 percent since early 2009.

Sales of previously occupied homes jumped in August to the highest level since May 2010. Builder confidence is at a six-year high and construction of single-family homes rose last month to the fastest annual rate in more than two years. However, even with the gains, home sales and construction remain well below healthy levels.

Home sales have been bolstered by the lowest mortgage rates on record. The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage touched a record low of 3.49 percent last week. The rate has been below 4 percent all year. Some economists are forecasting that the Fed's new program to $40 billion a month in mortgage backed securities will push 30-year mortgages down close to 3 percent in coming months.

U.S. new home sales august 2012

U.S. new home sales august 2012, U.S. housing market, existing home sales august 2012,: The United States has recorded a modest increase in home sales at 7.8%--the highest achieved in more than two years amidst a sluggish construction industry.

Reports released by the National Association of Realtors said existing home sales reached 4.82 million in August, up from 4.47 million recorded in July. These numbers exceeded the expectation of 4.55 million units sold during the period based on a survey conducted by Reuters.

This positive activity resulted in the increase by 9% to $187,400 of current median prices compared to 2011.

“The housing market is steadily recovering with consistent increases in both home sales and median prices. More buyers are taking advantage of excellent housing affordability conditions,” said NAR’s chief economist Lawrence Yun in an issued statement.

The decision of the Federal Reserve to buy $40 billion in mortgage securities each month is seen to slash interest rates further and free up more liquidity in the market. The remaining obstacle for would-be home buyers is the lending standard for credit scores.

Distressed property sales, including foreclosures and short sales, account for 22% of August sales, lower by 2% compared to the previous month. Inventory moved up 2.9% to 2.47 million units ending August, a 6.1 month supply at the current pace of sales.

An estimated 80% of all new mortgages are refinancing of existing properties, the Mortgage Bankers Association said in a separate statement.

This confirms the trend that some 15% to 20% of existing home purchases are made by investors, who have taken a liking of properties in the cities of New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and South Florida.

New York-based developer Centurion Real Estate Partners principal John Tashjian told ibtimes.com that it may take two to three more years before home prices will scale up, but, nonetheless, the U.S. property sector is “on the right path to recovery.”

Mr. Tashjian further explained that the Fed’s move to keep benchmark rates low through 2015 boosted confidence in the U.S. housing market.

The changing landscape of the U.S. property sector had so far benefitted the listed home builders including the country’s largest luxury builder Toll Brothers Inc. (NYSE: TOL), ), Lennar Corp. (NYSE: LEN) and PulteGroup Inc. (NYSE: PHM). Shares of said companies have surged by an average 2 to 5% in recent weeks.

Gold futures prices for week Sept 3-7 2012

Gold futures prices for week Sept 3-7 2012 : Gold futures ended Friday’s session at the highest level since late-March, after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke indicated that the U.S. central bank could implement fresh stimulus measures to strengthen the U.S. economic recovery.

On the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures for October delivery settled at USD1,691.65 a troy ounce by close of trade on Friday, the highest level since March 27.

On the week, gold futures added 1.25%, the second consecutive weekly gain. In August, gold futures rose 4.5%, the largest monthly gain since January.

Gold futures were likely to find support at USD1,634.55 a troy ounce, the low from August 22 and near-term resistance at USD1,699.55, the high from March 27.

Gold prices rallied more than 2% Friday after Fed Chief Bernanke said he was open to more quantitative easing to help boost growth in the U.S. economy.

Speaking at the Fed’s annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Bernanke said the persistently high rate of unemployment was a “grave concern” and reiterated that the central bank was ready to provide additional policy accommodation as needed to shore up growth.

Official data on Wednesday showed that the U.S. economy expanded at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.7% in the three months to June, slightly higher than the preliminary estimate of 1.5%, but remained below the 2-2.5% rate required every quarter to hold the unemployment rate steady.

Bernanke downplayed the risks of quantitative easing and said the program had been effective in providing “meaningful support" to the recovery.

Moves in the gold price this year have largely tracked shifting expectations as to whether the U.S. central bank would pump more money into the financial system.

Gold gained as much as 15% earlier this year to hit USD1,790 an ounce after the Fed said in January it would keep interest rates near zero until at least late 2014 and indicated that it could introduce a fresh round of asset-purchases.

However, prices have lost almost 6% since late February, as the Fed failed to deliver more easing and amid concerns over the euro zone’s deepening debt crisis, which has fueled demand for the precious metal's hedge, the greenback.

Bernanke’s comments sparked a sell-off in the greenback, which further boosted the appeal of the precious metal.

The dollar index, which tracks the performance of the U.S. dollar against a basket of six other major currencies, declined 0.6% to settle the week at 81.20, the lowest since May 15.

Market players now looked ahead to the European Central Bank’s policy meeting on September 6, amid ongoing expectations the central bank will introduce fresh measures to help stabilize the euro zone's sovereign debt markets.

On Thursday, Italy saw borrowing costs ease at an auction of five and 10-year bonds, reflecting renewed optimism that European leaders are making progress in tackling the region’s debt crisis.

Gold traders will also focus on Friday’s closely-watched report on U.S. non-farm payrolls, which will allow investors to gauge the strength of the faltering labor market and the need for additional easing.

The Fed’s two-day policy meeting beginning September 12 is also on investors’ minds, amid ongoing speculation over how close the U.S. central bank is to implementing more stimulus measures.

Gold prices have rallied in recent weeks, climbing nearly 6% since August 15, amid growing hopes policymakers in the U.S., Europe and China will introduce fresh easing measures to prop up their respective economies.

Expectations of monetary stimulus tend to benefit gold, as the yellow metal is seen as a safe store of value and inflation hedge.

From a technical standpoint, the precious metal has further room to march higher after prices broke above key resistance levels on Friday, indicating bullish chart signals.

Elsewhere on the Comex, silver for December delivery settled at USD31.76 a troy ounce by close of trade on Friday, the highest since April 20. Silver prices rose 3.25% on the week and notched an impressive gain of 12% in August.

Meanwhile, copper for September delivery shed 0.65% over the week to settle at USD3.459 a pound

Copper prices have been under pressure in recent sessions amid ongoing concerns over the outlook for global economic growth.

Data released over the weekend showed that China’s Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index contracted for the first time in nine months in August, falling to 49.2 from 50.1 in July, as new orders slumped in the face of weakening global demand.

The disappointing data added to growing fears over a deeper-than-expected slowdown in the world’s largest copper consumer.

I still think it’s too early to jump to the conclusion that the FOMC will launch QE3 in the near future. During last week, the Euro also traded up against the USD. 02:30 – Chinese CPI: during July the Chinese inflation rate declined to an annual rate of 1.8%; this rate is well below China’s inflation target of 4% in annual terms. August US Nonfarm Payrolls outlook report 9/7/2012, Nonfarm Payrolls forecast august 2012 : Friday brings the August nonfarm payrolls report. Bernanke’s Friday comment about the “stagnation of the labor market” makes the jobs report significant. The July data showed 163,000 new jobs were created and market participants will watch to see if that sort of growth is maintained. Analysts surveyed by MarketWatch call for August payrolls to have risen by 120,000 and the unemployment rate to tick down to 8.2%.

US. consumer spending outlook report 8/30/2012

US. consumer spending outlook report 8/30/2012 : Consumer spending in the U.S. probably climbed in July by the most in five months, economists said before a report today. Household purchases, which account for about 70 percent of the economy, rose 0.5 percent last month after being little changed in June, according to the median estimate of 76 economists surveyed by Bloomberg.

Rising purchases suggest consumers bounced back last month after scrimping in June and May, which may set the stage for faster third-quarter economic growth. Even so, costlier gasoline and a jobless rate that has exceeded 8 percent since early 2009 threaten to limit spending gains in the second half of 2012.

“Households spent a little bit more in July, which is encouraging given that over the previous few months spending pretty much stagnated,” said Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics Ltd. in London. “If we jump forward, I get a bit worried again. I don’t really expect there to be big improvements in household spending in the next few months.”
The Commerce Department will release the spending report at 8:30 a.m. in Washington. Economists’ forecasts ranged from gains of 0.2 percent to 0.7 percent. Spending fell 0.1 percent in May.
The report may also show incomes grew 0.3 percent after increasing 0.5 percent in June, according to the survey median.
An early indicator of consumer purchases, retail sales rose 0.8 percent in July, the most in five months, Commerce Department data showed Aug. 14. Receipts climbed in all 13 sales categories, the first time that’s happened since 2005.

‘Quite Good’
“The back-to-school business has been really quite good,” Ed Stack, chairman and chief executive officer of Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. (DKS), said during an Aug. 14 earnings call. The Coraopolis, Pennsylvania-based retailer this month boosted its forecast for full-year earnings. “We’ve been very pleased with our business,” he said.

Retail shares have outperformed the broader market this year. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Supercomposite Retailing Index has climbed 24 percent since Dec. 30, compared with a 12 percent gain in the broader S&P 500.

A pickup in employment growth shored up household purchasing power last month. Payrolls rose by 163,000 workers in July, the most since February, according to Labor Department data. At the same time, the jobless rate rose to 8.3 percent, the highest level in five months.
Sustained consumer demand would boost the pace of economic expansion in the U.S. Americans’ purchases increased at a 1.7 percent annual rate in the second quarter, the smallest advance in a year.

Spending Forecast
Economists project consumer spending will increase at a 2 percent rate in the third quarter, according to the median forecast of 78 economists surveyed from Aug. 3 to Aug. 8.

Faster economic growth driven by household spending will probably hinge on bigger job gains. Measures of sentiment, nonetheless, indicate employment prospects are not picking up. The Conference Board’s index of consumer confidence fell in August by the most in 10 months, and the Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index dropped in the week ended Aug. 19 to the lowest level since January.

Gasoline prices present an additional obstacle. The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline climbed 28 cents since July 30 to reach $3.80 on Aug. 28, according to AAA, the nation’s largest auto club. Prices at the pump will be the highest ever for the U.S. Labor Day holiday, AAA forecast.

How economic issues Jackson Hole symposium September 1-2 2012

How economic issues Jackson Hole symposium September 1-2 2012 : Every year since 1978, central bankers from the world over come to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to talk about the current economic issues.

This weekend, on September 1 and September 2, hotshots in the financial world will once again gather for the symposium. Among a long list of topics to be discussed, investors will definitely be on their toes for the plans of two major central banks: the ECB and the Fed.

Bond buying from the ECB?
In recent weeks, there have been speculations that the ECB would intervene in bond markets by buying bonds of peripheral EZ countries to keep their borrowing costs from rising.

Market junkies were hoping to get more clues on the issue at this week's summit.
However, the ECB announced yesterday that head honcho Mario Draghi will not attend the meeting due to a heavy workload in the coming days. In fact, no one from the ECB executive board will make it to the conference!

Of course, the announcement only fueled speculations even further, as investors believe that the central bank is busy ironing out the details of another bond-buying program.

However, don't get too excited just yet. Some analysts warn that Draghi will not let us in on his plans before the German Constitutional Court passes its rule on the legality of the ESM on September 12. That said, I doubt we'll hear any details about bond buying and a yield cap this weekend.

Bernanke Comments on QE3
Back in 2010, our old buddy Big Ben Bernanke basically dropped a bomb at Jackson Hole - a liquidity bomb, that is!

With the U.S. economy down in the dumps, Bernanke announced that the Fed would be introducing another round of quantitative easing measures which infamously became known as QE2. Two years later, could history repeat itself?

Not so fast, my young padawan economists. As it turns out, many doubt that Bernanke will go so far as to use the symposium as a signaling event for the Fed's future monetary policy plans. With the August NFP figures not due until next week, it is unlikely that Bernanke will take a strong position on QE3.

Instead, we can probably expect the Fed Chairman to merely follow the same wait-and-see tone that the Fed has steadfastly stuck to the past few months.

How will the financial markets react?
Many traders may be getting caught up in the euphoria ahead of the meeting and may already be pricing in additional easing measures from both the ECB and Fed.

However, I've got a feeling that many market participants will be disappointed by the results of the symposium. If and when this happens, we could see the dollar rally as optimism for more liquidity dies down.

On the other hand, if there's even the slightest hint that the ECB will push through with putting a yield cap on bond yields, or if Bernanke signals that the Fed is ready to dump billions into the economy, we could see a strong risk rally take place.

In any case, make sure you tune in every now and then and see what's developing at the Jackson Hole Symposium! You never know when a game-changer may rock the markets!

German business climate outlook report 8/27/2012

German business climate outlook report 8/27/2012 : the Ifo Institute for Economic Research is to release a report on German business climate, a leading indicator of economic health.

A slew of data next week will show how badly Germany has been scarred by the euro zone crisis as its companies fear for key European export markets and the only vital support comes from consumers.

Three years into the debt crisis, growth in Europe's largest economy slowed in the second quarter of 2012 to 0.3 percent and a string of increasingly gloomy data has even raised the possibility of a second-half contraction.

The
Ifo business climate index, Germany's most influential leading indicator of economic health, is forecast to slip for the fourth month in a row, confirming a change in trend.

"The economy has slowed significantly. The
German economy will likely weaken slightly in the second half," said Commerzbank economist Ralph Solveen. "For a long time the debt crisis seemed not to bother German businesses. Only in the last three months Ifo has fallen significantly."

Ifo, seen down at an almost 3-1/2 year low of 102.6 from 103.3 in July, should confirm what hard data from the Purchasing Managers' Indicator (PMI) already showed this week: Germany's hitherto steady resilience to the crisis is waning.

Orders from abroad for Germany's manufacturing goods, a mainstay for the economy, fell this month at the fastest rate since April 2009. That will likely be reflected in Ifo's sub-index on business expectations, which is also seen dropping for a fourth consecutive month.

The slowdown carries risks for German Chancellor Angela Merkel as she seeks a third term in office next year and could tie her hands when it comes to bailing out indebted peers, especially if a nascent rise in unemployment accelerates.

For August, unemployment is expected to stay at 6.8 percent, still near post-reunification lows but following four months of rises in the number of people out of a job. Jobless data are due on Thursday.

While businesses are feeling the pain, consumers have so far continued to spend, mostly on big-ticket items, as low interest rates make saving unattractive. The GfK consumer sentiment survey, due out on Tuesday, is expected to be unchanged going into September after inching higher a month earlier.

Inflation is expected to tick up to 1.8 percent - or 2.0 using the EU measure - but policy makers do not see that as a risk to the economy.

US. New Home Sales report 23 august 2012 : US home sales and prices rose moderately in July amid signs that the worst housing crisis in living memory may be coming to an end.

According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR) existing home sales rose 2.3% to an annual rate of 4.47m units last month, a figure just below analysts' expectations. The median price for a home resale nationwide was $187,300 in July, 9.4% higher than in the same month a year earlier.

The median price of an existing home jumped 9.4 percent from a year earlier, the biggest 12-month gain since January 2006, to $187,300 from $171,200 in July 2011, today’s report showed.

Compared with a year earlier, purchases increased 11 percent before adjusting for seasonal variations.

The number of previously owned homes on the market climbed 1.3 percent to 2.4 million. At the current sales pace, it would take 6.4 months to sell those houses compared with 6.5 months at the end of the prior month. The group said it considers 6 months’ supply “normal.”
