Dow Jones, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures down feb 29 2012

Dow Jones, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures down feb 29 2012, US stock down 2/29/2012 ; U.S. stocks traded lower Wednesday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average recently fell 24 points to 12981, the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index declined 2.4 points to 1370 and the Nasdaq Composite was off 3.9 points to 2983. Among the companies whose shares are actively trading are Staples Inc. (SPLS), DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. (DWA,) and Carter's Inc. (CRI).

Staples' ($14.87, -$1.13, -7.06%) fiscal fourth-quarter earnings rose 3.2% as the office-supply giant booked modest sales gains in its North American retail and delivery businesses and held margins steady.

DreamWorks' ($17.68, -$1.97, -10.03%) fourth-quarter earnings dropped 72% as DVD sales of the studio's hit "Kung Fu Panda 2" movie failed to match the revenue generated from a more-crowded film slate a year ago. Shares were off on the weaker-than-expected profit.

While many apparel companies didn't experience a robust holiday season, things were better at Carter's Inc. ($47.93, +$4.24, +9.70%) as the children's-focused company easily beat its October forecast and analysts' latest views. Core per-share earnings surprisingly rose as weaker gross margins were offset by overhead rising a good bit less than revenue did. Same-store sales grew about 7% for both the namesake and OshKosh chains, and Carter's expects solid overall top-line gains for this year.

First Solar (FSLR, $32.80, -$3.60, -9.90%) swung to a fourth-quarter loss as write-downs and other charges weighed on U.S. solar-panel maker's bottom line. The company also cut its 2012 top-line guidance and said it will scale back manufacturing and halt plans for a new factory in Vietnam to match supply with weaker-than-expected demand.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is delaying a rule that would require cars sold in the U.S. to have rear-view cameras. The rule now won't be issued until the end of the year. Shares of Gentex Corp. (GNTX, $24.11, -$3.53, -12.77%), which designs, makes and sells interior rearview cameras, among other products for automobiles, tumbled on the news.
