The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 17.18 points, or 0.14%, to 12096.16. The blue-chip index spent much of the morning in negative territory before turning positive in afternoon trading. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index gained 6.02 points, or 0.48%, to 1257.81, led higher by technology and industrial stocks. The technologyoriented Nasdaq Composite rose 28.98 points, or 1.09%, to 2686.20. Trading volume was light.
Investors kept a close watch on the latest developments in Italy. Prime ministerdesignate Mario Monti said he will present a plan Wednesday to the nation's president on how to govern Italy. But he didn't reveal details on potential cabinet officials.
A batch of US economic data released pointed to signs of an improving economy. Before the market opened, Dow futures had dropped more than 100 points, but they regained ground after the figures were released.
