Tips for Young Drivers Best Car Insurance

Tips for Young Drivers Best Car Insurance ; Car insurance can be costly for young drivers, but it doesn’t have to be that way. By following a few simple car insurance tips for young drivers, younger drivers can get auto insurance premiums that are a fraction of what their peers pay, while keeping the same level of car insurance coverage:

The Vehicle: Firstly, keep in mind that the vehicle you choose will have great bearing on your auto insurance premiums. The faster your vehicle, the larger its engine size, and the more customizations it has, the greater your car insurance premiums will be. In some cases, these factors can mean that you pay several times more for your car insurance coverage than your peers do. If cost is a factor, and it usually is for new drivers, you would be better off buying a stock low model 4-cylinder with front wheel drive and no modifications.

The Training :
The driving training you receive will also impact your auto insurance premiums. Most car insurance companies will give you a 10 percent discount for attending a certified driver’s education course – the same one likely required in your state for you to obtain a license when under 18. This discount can be applied to your car insurance premiums for as long as 10 years, depending on the car insurance company. You can also receive up to an additional 10 percent off by attending a defensive driving course. These classes are commonly offered for free or for a small fee (e.g. $15) and take just 4-8 hours to complete.

The Grades : Your grades will make a difference in the auto insurance premiums you pay as well. For young drivers who have a GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 or higher, most car insurance companies will provide good student discounts up to 40 percent – making it a good incentive to keep your grades up.

The Frequency :
You may also be able to save as much as 56 percent on your auto insurance premiums by opting into a usage based insurance program. Usage-based car insurance (also called Pay As You Drive insurance) is a great deal if you drive less than 30 miles per day on average and, again, the savings can be significant.

The Record : However, most importantly, pay attention to your driving record. A speeding ticket will typically cause a 10 percent increase in your car insurance premiums (that is for each one), whereas an at-fault accident could increase your auto insurance premiums by as much as 30 percent. As such, by simply being a responsible and conscientious driver, you can keep your premiums low.

The History :
Lastly, be sure that you look to car insurance companies that know you. If you started out on a parent’s policy, go to that auto insurance company first – the longer you are with a car insurance company, the lower your auto insurance premiums tend to be, usually because of loyalty discounts, but also because the longer you are with the same company the less of a risk you are perceived to be.
