Kia, Hyundai and Volkswagen all were in a tie for first place, with each having nine car models being awarded the top safety award. Toyota (perhaps surprisingly after their bad publicity of the last year) and Ford came joint second, trailing the leaders by one model each.

The outcome of these awards could be very helpful in helping the three top foreign car manufacturers try and get a sizeable portion of the US Car market.

Some of the stragglers included Honda and Nissan, who had two cars apiece given the safety award, and BMW and Mitsubishi only getting one award each.

Among the highest ranked cars were the Hyundai Sonata midsize, Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion and the Toyota Sienna. The stress tests on the cars has been made more challenging this year, and literally tests every facet of the car for its strength, durability and function.
