Dow Chemical slumped 3.2 percent to $32.86. Chief Executive Officer Andrew Liveris is expanding plastics production and developing genetically modified seeds and herbicides to compete with Monsanto Co.’s Roundup Ready product line. Profit from plastics, Dow’s biggest unit, tumbled 29 percent as raw-material costs rose and prices for resins such as polyethylene fell on slack demand.
Viacom retreated 6.9 percent to $43.71. Nickelodeon’s audience shrunk during the Christmas holiday period, the biggest quarter of the year for the children’s network, according to Nielsen Co. Nickelodeon contributes about 15 percent of Viacom’s cable-TV advertising revenue annually and 25 percent during the December quarter, Mike Morris, an analyst with Davenport & Co., wrote in a Jan. 10 note.
Qualcomm rallied 4.8 percent to $62.41. The company lifted its forecasts for phone shipments based on strength in India and China, and said smartphone demand is boosting chip sales and licensing income. Qualcomm owns code division multiple access technology, or CDMA, and can levy royalties on all 3G phones and networks, providing most of its profit. It is also the largest seller of chips that connect phones to mobile networks.
Dell Inc. gained 1.9 percent to $17.73. The maker of personal computers was raised to “overweight” from “underweight” at JPMorgan Chase & Co. The 12-month share-price estimate is $21.
Green Mountain Coffee surged 21 percent to $65. Chief Executive Officer Lawrence Blanford has sought to draw customers by bolstering its K-Cup portfolio with Starbucks Corp. and Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc. products. Seattle-based Starbucks, which sells K-Cups in grocery and mass retail stores, said last month that annual pod sales may grow to $1 billion.
