Nifty volatile december 5 2011, SBI, ICICI Bank, Tata Motors : The Nifty remained under pressure amid a choppy trade, led by profit booking in oil & gas, FMCG, banks, steel and auto (two-wheeler) stocks. European markets too turned flat after initial upmove. The Sensex dropped 96 points to 16,750.52 and the Nifty lost 27 points to 5,022.85.

Among financial stocks, HDFC and HDFC Bank were down 1% each; shares of country's largest lender ICICI Bank and SBI fell 0.7% and 0.3%, respectively.

Index heavyweights Reliance Industries, ITC and Bharti Airtel dropped 1% each. Tata Steel and Sun Pharma topped the selling list, falling 2%.

Among others, L&T, ONGC, SBI, HUL and Infosys were marginally lower. However, BHEL held its top position among gainers, rising over 1%.

NTPC, TCS, JP Associates, Maruti and Hindalco were other gainers among largecaps.

In the midcap space, Apollo Hospital, SKS Microfinance, Ashok Leyland, Parsvnath and Aurobindo Pharma gained 3.5-5%. However, Pantaloon Retail, Bombay Rayon, Glodyne Tech, Kwality Dairy and Vaarad Ventures fell 5-12%.

Most active shares on exchanges were SBI, Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, Tata Steel, Reliance Industries, Axis Bank and Tata Motors.

At 12:56 hours IST : Sensex choppy; L&T, BHEL, Tata Motors support

The market recovered from day's low amid a choppy trade. Index heavyweight and capital goods major BHEL shot up 2.5%. L&T and SBI turned positive, rising 0.5-0.7%. However, the fall in oil & gas, FMCG and private banks stocks capped the recovery.

The Sensex was down 29 points at 16,818.06 and the Nifty fell 10 points to 5,039.75.

In the largecap space, Jaiprakash Associates, Maruti Suzuki, Hindalco, DLF, Axis Bank, Reliance Communications and Cairn India gained 1-2%. Tata Motors rose 0.8%.

However, Reliance Power, Sun Pharma, Sesa Goa, Tata Steel, Sterlite Industries, ITC and Hero Motocorp dropped 1-1.8%.

Reliance Industries, HDFC, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, HUL and ONGC were down 0.3-0.6%. The market breadth was neutral; about 1275 shares advanced while 1182 shares declined on the BSE.

On the global front, Asian markets remained mixed. Shanghai fell 1.2%. Straits Times and Taiwan slipped 0.5% while Hang Seng, Nikkei and Kospi were up 0.4-0.6%. For the latest updates on the stock market, visit Stock Market Today
