The King's Speech leads the Golden Globe nominations 2011

The King's Speech leads the Golden Globe nominations 2011 ; British movie The King's Speech, about the efforts of King George VI to overcome a debilitating stammer, has scooped seven nominations in next year's Golden Globe Awards, including best film drama.

Colin Firth, who plays the King, has been nominated for best actor in a drama film and Helena Bonham Carter has been nominated for best supporting actress for her portrayal of the Queen Mother.

The Fighter and The Social Network have been nominated for best movie, as have Black Swan - set in the ballet world - and sci-fi blockbuster Inception.

Neither Inception nor The Social Network are exactly cinematic masterpieces, so there are high hopes that the low budget British historical drama, The King's Speech, will do well at the Golden Globes and the Oscars.

Firth, who has just been presented with the best actor prize by the New York Film Critics Circle, goes up against Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), James Franco (127 hours), Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine) and Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter) for the best actor in a drama award. The ceremony on 16 January will be hosted by Ricky Gervais.
