Minutes of FOMC meeting outlook may 16 2012

Minutes of FOMC meeting outlook may 16 2012 : Wall Street will scrutinize the minutes from the FOMC’s late April meeting, which the Fed will release on Wednesday at around 2 p.m. Eastern time.

The entire financial world will be paying attention to the meeting minutes from the last FOMC meeting where the Federal Reserve decided to keep rates unchanged with no new stimuli announced.

At that April 24-25 meeting, the FOMC repeated its expectation that interest rates would not rise until late 2014 at the earliest, and it took no action on monetary policy. But Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke spurred stock market gains when he told reporters on April 25 that “we remain entirely prepared to take additional balance-sheet actions as necessary to achieve our objectives. Those tools remained very much on the table and we would not hesitate to use them, should the economy require that additional support.”

Information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in March suggests that the economy has been expanding moderately. Labor market conditions have improved in recent months; the unemployment rate has declined but remains elevated. Household spending and business fixed investment have continued to advance. Despite some signs of improvement, the housing sector remains depressed. Inflation has picked up somewhat, mainly reflecting higher prices of crude oil and gasoline. However, longer-term inflation expectations have remained stable.
