Hyundai Motor Co. (005380.SE), Kia Motors Corp. (000270.SE), GM Korea Co., SsangYong Motor Co. (003620.SE) and Renault Samsung Motors Corp. sold 689,915 vehicles, up from 537,631 units a year earlier, according to data released from these companies.
Their combined domestic sales climbed 5.6% to 112,905 units last month from 106,934. February exports soared 34% to 577,010 units from 430,697 units.
Hyundai and Kia, which together form the world's fifth-largest car maker by sales, sold more cars than the rest in February, helped by solid overseas sales of higher-end models including the Sonata and Optima sedans.
Hyundai's February exports climbed 33% on year to 307,332 units, while its domestic sales gained 8.6% to 53,647 units. Kia's exports soared 45% to 200,112 units but domestic sales inched up 2.5% to 40,012 units during the same period, the companies said.
GM Korea saw its total sales rise 15% to 62,959 units and SsangYong Motor posted a 31% on-year rise in total sales to 8,866 units. However, Renault Samsung suffered a 2.4% fall in total sales to 16,987 units due to a sharp decline in local sales.
Month-on-month, their combined sales were up 11% from 618,853 units sold in January.
