Canadian new car sales February 2012 ; Some of the world’s largest automakers saw Canadian sales grow by double digits last month as more customers flocked to showrooms shopping for fuel-efficient vehicles amid a spike in gasoline prices.

Overall vehicle sales were up 11.2 per cent last month to 106,712 from 96,006, according to a report from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants. Car sales shot up 17 per cent to 46,285 last month from 39,514 in February 2011.

GENERAL MOTORS OF CANADA
Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac dealers reported 14,258 deliveries in February 2012, an increase of 16 per cent over sales in February 2011. For the 2012 calendar year to date, GM Canada’s sales have increased 1.4 per cent. Passenger car sales rose 5.8 per cent in February, driven by strong performances by the Canadian-built Buick Regal and the Chevrolet Camaro, as well as solid sales for the Buick LaCrosse, up 53.9 per cent. Customer demand for fuel-efficient crossovers remained high, with sales for the Canadian-made Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain up 41.5 per cent. Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks continued to demonstrate their leading capabilities, with Silverado, and Sierra sales up 7 per cent.

MITSUBISHI CANADA
Led by a trio of strong-selling vehicles, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada recorded 1,581 deliveries last month, a 1.4 per cent increase over 1,559 sales last year. It was a record February for Mitsubishi, now in its 10th year in Canada. Mitsubishi’s newest crossover, the compact RVR, was February’s top seller at 605 deliveries. RVR features class-leading fuel economy at 6.4 L/100 km. In February, RVR sales were followed by all Lancer models at 481 deliveries and the mid-size Outlander sports utility vehicle with 438 sales. Twenty deliveries of the zero-tailpipe emission, all-electric 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV were also recorded in February.

BMW CANADA
BMW Group Canada (BMW and MINI brands combined) reported best-ever records in February with 2,181 retails, an increase of more than 7.2 per cent compared to February 2011. A total of 4,026 units have been sold year-to-date representing an 18 per cent increase over the same period last year. The BMW brand retailed 1,845 units in February for a total of 3,489 units year-to-date, an increase of 15.6 per cent over year-to-date sales in 2011. The MINI brand reported its best-ever February with 336 units retailed, an increase of 44.8 per cent over February 2011. On the year, MINI has retailed a total of 537 units, up 37.6 per cent over the same period last year. Sales of the MINI Countryman climbed 83 per cent compared to the same period last year, while sales of the MINI hatch and all-new MINI Coupé continued strong as well. BMW pre-owned reported February retails of 832 units, representing a decrease of 8 per cent over the same period last year. MINI’s pre-owned monthly sales decreased 47.8 per cent compared to February 2011 results, with a total of 93 units retailed.

CHRYSLER CANADA
Chrysler Canada has announced the company’s 27th consecutive month of year-over-year sales growth. February sales were 16,536, compared to 15,238 in February 2011, representing a 9 per cent increase. Chrysler Canada reported the highest sales of any company in Canada for the second month in a row. Ram truck sales continued to surpass monthly records. For February 2012, 4,737 Ram truck sales were reported, up 11 per cent from the previous record set in 2011. Jeep Wrangler sales of 1,131 were 37 per cent higher than the previous February record of 823 set in 2007. Strong Wrangler sales helped propel Jeep brand sales to a 24 per cent increase versus February of 2011. Passenger car sales have doubled when compared to February 2011, with 2,410 units sold in February 2012. This has been led primarily by sales of the Chrysler 300 and Chrysler 200, which experienced 351 and 679 sales respectively, representing significant increases over the same period one year ago. The fuel efficient Fiat 500 also had a strong showing, with 533 sales in February, 2012.

TOYOTA CANADA
Toyota Canada Inc. achieved a 31 per cent sales increase with 12,384 Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles sold in February 2012. According Toyota Canada Senior Managing Director Tony Wearing in a statement: “When looking at the intermediate segment, Camry remains #1 for the fourth straight month. And within the segment for Toyota, 37 per cent of our sales are hybrid vehicles, Camry Hybrid, Prius and Prius v.”

HYUNDAI CANADA
Hyundai Auto Canada sold 9,266 vehicles in February, representing a 6.5 per cent increase over the same month in 2011. The February result, the vehicle maker’s best ever, caps a month where the Hyundai Elantra won the Canadian Car of the Year award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada and where the company saw its 38th consecutive month of year-over-year sales growth. Year-to-date, Hyundai has sold 16,726 vehicles in the first two months of 2012, representing an 8.7 per cent increase over the same period last year. In February, Hyundai vehicles consuming less than 5.0 L/100 km represented 48 per cent of total sales. The Sonata Hybrid intermediate sedan, Elantra compact sedan, Accent subcompact, and Veloste consume fuel at a respective rate of just 4.6, 4.9, 4.8 and 4.9 L/100km on the highway.

MERCEDES-BENZ CANADA
Mercedes-Benz Canada and its national dealer network have delivered a grand total of 2,393 Mercedes-Benz and smart units throughout February. This represents the best February on record for the group, and an overall sales increase of 16.8 per cent, or 344 units, compared to February 2011. A total of 2,158 Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and luxury light trucks were retailed in February, which is ahead 18.4 per cent, or 336 units, for the month. Passenger car sales totaled 1,025 units in February, which was fueled by strong C-Class, E-Class family and CLS-Class sales. On the luxury light trucks side, a total of 1,133 units were sold. This represents an increase of 424 vehicles or 59.8% compared to 2011 sales figures, and can be attributed to strong performance across the entire luxury light truck vehicle range with particularly significant M-Class and GL-Class sales growth.

NISSAN CANADA
Nissan Canada has announced its best February sales on record with a total of 6,342 units sold, an increase of 17.3 per cent over February 2011. Sales for the Nissan brand were 5,783 units, up 16.6 per cent, while Infiniti sales grew by 24.2 per cent, with 559 units sold. Rogue led Nissan sales again this month achieving a new February record with 1,191 units sold (up 54.7 per cent). Sales of Altima and Sentra rounded out the top three with 909 and 905 units sold, respectively, while sales of Maxima, Murano and Versa all jumped significantly in February (81.9, 39.6 and 26.6 per cent, respectively). Infiniti sales jumped 24.2 per cent in February with 559 units sold. The popular G line-up set a new sales record this month with 382 units sold, up 63.9 per cent over February 2011. The Infiniti EX is the next best seller in the line-up with 69 units sold.

KIA CANADA
On the heels of its best-ever January, Kia Canada achieved its best-ever February. With 4,644 new vehicles sold during the month, the vehicle maker experienced 20 per cent growth compared to February 2011. A variety of vehicle lines contributed to the record February including Kia’s 2012 Kia Sorento compact utility vehicle with 970 units sold. As for the Forte models, 964 units collectively were sold, while the Optima mid-size sedan established a record sales month with 824 vehicles sold.

SUBARU CANADA
Subaru Canada announced record February sales with an increase of 7.8 per cent compared to the year-ago period. With 1,902 units sold during the month, Subaru’s Canadian sales have surpassed the previous record for February results set just last year. Year-to-date results are also up by 7.4 per cent. February’s record month was bolstered by steep Impreza and WRX/STI sales. Both set new records in February as Impreza sales reached 684 units, up 54.8 per cent over the same month last year, while WRX/STI sales rose by 18.4 per cent over last February.

HONDA CANADA
Combined February sales of 8,883 units by the Honda and Acura divisions of Honda Canada represented a 14 per cent increase over last year’s sales. The Honda Automobile Division reported February sales of 7,885 units, up 14 per cent from last year, led by strong February sales of Honda Fit (up 111 per cent), Ridgeline (up 108 per cent), Pilot (up 49 per cent) and record monthly sales of the new CR-V with 2,836 units, ahead of last year’s monthly record by 342 units. The Acura Division reported February sales of 998 units, up 10 per cent over last year, bolstered by a 64 per cent monthly increase in sales of Acura TL.
