The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 35.76 points, or 0.3%, to 12683 in early afternoon trade. Blue chips slumped back after hitting their highest level since May early in Monday's session. The Dow is fresh off its third consecutive weekly gain and closed Friday at a six-month high.
Standard & Poor's 500-stock index ticked down three points, or 0.3%, to 1313 and Nasdaq Composite fell 8 points, or 0.3%, to 2778. Traders cited the desire to lock in profits as a reason for the late-morning turnaround in U.S. equities. All three benchmark have posted weekly gains for the last three weeks.
