The rand was bid at R8.05/US$ from R8.15/$ at the JSE's close on Wednesday. Gold traded at US$1,651.02 a troy ounce (oz) from $1,635.25/oz at the JSE's previous close, while platinum was quoted at $1,502.50/oz, from $1,481.50/oz at the previous close.
Investors are looking ahead to rate announcements from the Bank of England and European Central Bank.
As well as the announcements from the central banks, investors will be keeping an eye on Spain which will auction €4 billion - €5 billion in July 2015-, April 2016- and October 2016-dated bonds. Citigroup said this will attract a fair amount of attention.
Jitters about Greece continued to simmer in the background. Greece might need to cut its debt by an additional €15 billion even after it completes a deal with private creditors for a 50% haircut, people familiar with the matter told Dow Jones Newswires on Wednesday. However, at the same time the Greek finance minister Evangelos Venizelos said talks with private sector creditors on the country's debt writedown plan are "at a very good point".
On the JSE, Anglo American lifted R4.39 or 1.39% to R319.20, BHP Billiton rose R4.80 or 1.90% at R257.55, and Sasol added R2.88 to R397.88.
Among gold shares, Gold One International withered 15c or 3.49% to 415c. In platinum stocks, Amplats improved R8.48 or 1.54% to R558.48. Among other miners, Exxaro lessened R2.38 or 1.38% to R169.62 and African Rainbow Minerals secured R2.01 or 1.15% to R176.50.
In industrial stocks, Mondi Plc gained 63c or 1.05% to R60.44. Construction group M&R Holdings generated 45c or 1.71% to R26.77.
In technology stocks, Reunert collected 81c or 1.22% at R67.
Telecoms group MTN declined 61c to R132.09. The trader said that investors were getting spooked by the strike action over the removal of the fuel subsidy in Nigeria, one of the group's larger markets.
In banking and financials, Nedbank accumulated R2.87 or 1.95% at R150.40, while Absa moved up R2.45 or 1.69% to R147.30. Old Mutual Plc garnered 27c or 1.55% to R17.67.
