At 12.53 p.m., the Sensex was trading down 29.36 points or 0.18% at 16,125.26 with 18 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 14.10 points or 0.29% at 4,851.90 with 37 components falling.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a decline of 67.88 points or 0.42% at 16,086.74, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 22.00 points or 0.45%, at 4,844.00.
Sensex Movers
Reliance Industries contributed fall of 30.59 points in the Sensex. It was followed by H D F C Bank (18.6 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (14.24 points), Hindustan Unilever (9.06 points) and I C I C I Bank (6.6 points).
However, Infosys contributed rise of 31.61 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (16.99 points), Bharti Airtel (7.68 points), I T C (7.23 points) and Tata Steel (4.22 points).
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Consultancy Services (2.21%), Infosys Technologies (2.08%), Maruti Suzuki India (1.50%), Sterlite Industries (India) (1.45%), Bharti Airtel (1.43%), and Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.35%).
On the other hand, Reliance Industries (1.93%), D L F (1.83%), NTPC (1.78%), Hindustan Unilever (1.77%), H D F C Bank (1.76%), and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.58%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Midcap index was at 5568.25 down by 14.09 points or by 0.25%.
The major losers were Alok Industries (1.81%), Andhra Bank (1.47%), Amara Raja Batteries (0.97%), Amtek India (0.76%) and Alfa-Laval (India) (0.08%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Oil & Gas index was at 7,720.77, down by 101 points or by 1.29%. The major losers were Gujarat State Petronet (0.76%), G A I L (India) (0.66%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (0.63%), Cairn India (0.34%) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation (0.33%).
The Bankex index was at 10,181.25, down by 119.24 points or by 1.16%. The major losers were Bank Of India(2.01%), H D F C Bank (1.76%), Federal Bank (0.73%), Canara Bank (0.34%) and Bank Of Baroda (0.3%).
The Realty index was at 1,565.65, down by 16.13 points or by 1.02%. The major losers were Sunteck Realty (3.83%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (2.34%), D B Realty (2.22%), D L F (1.83%) and Godrej Properties (0.15%).
On the other hand, the IT index was at 5,592.02, up by 109.66 points or by 2.00%. The major gainers were Infosys (2.08%), H C L Technologies (1.54%), Mphasis (1.11%), Hexaware Technologies (1.03%) and CORE Education and Technologies (0.48%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was negative with 1,216 advances against 1,277 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
Everonn Education topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 968.33 million. It was followed by Tata Steel (Rs. 404.18 million), Infosys (Rs. 359.30 million) and State Bank Of India (Rs. 265.01 million).
