At 0840 GMT, the Stoxx Europe 600 index was up 0.6% at 248.64. Frankfurt's DAX was up 0.8% at 6124.74 but Paris's CAC-40 succumbed to some profit-taking and was down 0.6% at 3206.55. London's FTSE 100, which was closed Monday for the Bank Holiday, fared the best. Basic resources were the standout gainers, with the Stoxx Europe 600 index for the sector up 2.7% at 459.33, boosted by recent positive data, namely strong Chinese manufacturing figures released over the weekend.
The overall tone may have been positive, but market participants remained skeptical about whether this year will be any better than the last, which was marred by the euro-zone debt crisis.
