In the following brief excerpt from just one of the many in-depth interviews, an experienced analyst discusses the outlook for the Silver Mining sector for investors.
Andrew Kaip, Director and Precious Metals Mining Analyst, joined BMO Capital Markets Corp. in 2009, covering the precious metals sector with a focus on silver equities. Prior to joining BMO, he spent five years in equity research with a focus on emerging gold producers. Previously, Mr. Kaip spent more than 10 years in the mineral exploration industry, where he worked with senior mining and exploration companies in Canada and internationally.
TWST: Where are you pointing investors now? What are some of your favorite stories at the moment?
Mr. Kaip: Our favorite, with respect to senior silver companies, currently is Silver Wheaton (SLW). Silver Wheaton is a royalty stream company. It's showing very good growth. It's a very good business model, and it provides investors really a much lower-risk way to acquire exposure into silver equities. So it is a preferred name in that regard.
From the senior producer side we are also favoring a company called Pan American Silver (PAAS). Pan American operates a number mines through South and Central America, and the company has a number of development projects that it will bring forward over the next couple of years that will dramatically increase the size of its operation and provide very significant growth over the next couple of years.
And so that's why we like Pan American - good operator with a number of good operations already in place, building for the future.
TWST: You mentioned you like some of the junior companies and midlevel companies as well.
Mr. Kaip: On the intermediate side there are two companies that we like. Silver Standard (SSRI) is a very, very good emerging intermediate producer. The company has a number of assets that it can develop, and it has been selling noncore assets to be able to raise cash to develop these projects and really limit further dilution to existing shareholders. We like the business combination that is being presented by the company, and we think that it provides good long-term value predicated on growth and minimal dilution along the way.
And then the other one is First Majestic (AG). First Majestic is a company that entered the intermediate range last year as it developed its first larger operation, and now it's going through further growth with a new mine in development. It provides good growth. The company has matured to become a reliable operator and consistently meeting its guidance, and it provides decent valuation based on near-term fundamentals like price-to-earnings ratio.
And then on the junior side there are really two names that we have been suggesting investors look at.
