insurance tips From State Farm - Insurance is assurance for storm victims

insurance tips From State Farm - Insurance is assurance for storm victims : Saturday's tornadoes in Virginia and North Carolina have caused millions of dollars in damage.

The task of rebuilding is underway and can be daunting for people who've lost their homes, their vehicles and their livelihoods.

The Squires family knows they're fortunate. "I just thank God we made it out alive," said Gene Squires, who lives in the Coke community.

The twister picked up their camper and dropped it on their two trucks.

Their insurance agent, who lives in Gloucester, was assessing the damage and told them the catastrophe teams should be out by Tuesday.

"It can be overwhelming. I want to make everyone happy and make sure they get back to normal as quickly as possible, but I understand that's not possible in a 24-hour period," said Tom Wilke.

In North Carolina, the State Farm insurance company said it had already had more than 2,000 home claims and 1,200 auto claims as of Monday afternoon.

INSURANCE TIPS: (From State Farm)
  • -Work with your insurance agent or claims adjustor to fully understand the claims process
  • -Choose a reputable roofing contractor. Look for a licensed or bonded roofer and request references. Not all jurisdictions require licensing of roofing contractors. Ask to see certificates of insurance to be sure both liability and workers compensation insurance coverage is carried, and are in force during the time the roofing work is being done.
  • -Contact the Better Business Bureau or the National Roofing Contractors Association for assistance in locating a professional contractor in your area.
  • -If anyone visits your home without an appointment and professes to represent your insurer, or to be there at the request of your insurer, ask for ID and contact your insurer to confirm before allowing access.
