A massive tsunami triggered by the largest earthquake in Japan's recorded history slammed into the eastern coast sweeping away boats, cars, homes and people.
Tsunami warnings were sounded across the Pacific, as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire US West Coast.
Authorities said at least 60 people killed and 56 missing after the magnitude 8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot (seven metre) tsunami, but there are fears the death toll will rise as the full extent of the earthquakes effects are discovered.
