Japan situation Earthquake and tsunami today news : The quake that struck 2:46pm was followed by a series of aftershocks, including a 7.4-magnitude one about 30 minutes later. The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded the strength of the first quake to a magnitude 8.9.

The after-effects of the quake are evident in Japan's transport network, with roads damaged and the army mobilised. Another six - one with a magnitude of 6.1 - have recently shaken the country's north east, the US Geological Survey reports. he UK ambassador to Japan, David Warren, has told the BBC that his concern is with helping any British nationals caught up in the disaster: "We're in touch with the local authorities, as well as with central government, to try and identify and assist as many British people as possible. Japanese earthquake triggers tsunami alert
New Zealand is on tsunami alert this morning following last night's massive Japanese earthquake, but it is unlikely to generate a noticeable wave along the South Canterbury coast.
