Other terms you may have heard include sciatica, pinched nerve, herniated disc (or herniated disk), bulging disc, ruptured disk, slipped disc, or disc protrusion. All of these terms generally refer to a similar medical problem where there is an injury to the spinal disc putting pressure on the spinal cord. Depending on where in the spine the injury occurs, different symptoms result.

For example, an injury at the fifth lumbar vertebrae (L5) can cause weakness in the big toe and ankle, with numbness and pain on the top of the foot and possible the buttocks. Injury at the first sacral vertebrae (S1) can also cause weakness of the ankle, but the numbness and pain will more likely radiate down to the bottom of the foot or the oustide of the foot.
