It said the smallholding sector contributed 93.7 per cent of total production while the estate sector's contribution was only 6.3 per cent. Total natural rubber export in December showed 4.5 per cent or 3,726 tonnes decline vis-a-vis the previous month.
However, year-on-year export increased moderately by 12.9 per cent or 9,101 tonnes, it said.
Standard Malaysian Rubber (SMR) contributed 93.1 per cent of total export, 45.7 per cent was SMR 20.
Exports are mainly to China, accounting for 37.9 per cent, Germany 13.7 per cent, South Korea (4.7 per cent), the United States (4.7 per cent), Iran (4.5 per cent) and Portugal (2.9 per cent).
The department said 62,895 tonnes were imported in December, 2.6 per cent or 1,602 tonnes higher than in November. Imports, however, dropped 23.3 per cent last year.
It said the main type of rubber imported was latex concentrated, making up 41.8 per cent of total imports.
Thailand was the main supplier of natural rubber, accounting for 50.5 per cent, Vietnam (15.1 per cent), the Philippines (10 per cent) and Myanmar (6.2 per cent), it said. Domestic consumption in December rose 4.6 per cent or 1,613 tonnes from November to register at 36,584 tonnes but fell 10.9 per cent on a year-on-year basis.
The three highest consuming products were rubber gloves (66.8 per cent), rubber thread (12.9 per cent) and tyre and tubes (7.6 per cent), it said.
The three products consumed 87.3 per cent or 31,939 tonnes of the total natural rubber consumption, said the department. It also said stock level rose 8.4 per cent or 11,049 tonnes to 142,430 tonnes compared with the level held in the previous month.
It was however lower by 11.7 per cent than the previous year, it said. The average monthly price of latex concentrate reached 944.29 sen, up 11.8 per cent, it said. As for SMR 20, the average price surged 10.3 per cent to 1,415.69 sen from the previous month.
The average price of latex concentrated surged 60.8 per cent and 52.9 per cent SMR 20 year-on-year, it said. Workers engaged in rubber estates in December was 10,813, employees 10,810 and wages RM13.7 million, it said.
Month-on-month comparison of total paid employees showed an increase of 1.4 per cent while year-on-year, it went up 4.2 per cent. In December, rubber production productivity in estates improved 30 per cent to 131.4kg per hectare when compared to last month. However, in year-on-year comparison, it fell 11.4 per cent.
