Toyota Etios Price in India entry model at below Rs 5 lakh

Toyota Etios Price in India entry model at below Rs 5 lakh ; Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) on Wednesday launched its first compact sedan, Etios with the entry level model priced aggressively at Rs 4.96 lakh. “The road makes the car,” the TMC President, Mr Akio Toyoda, told newspersons indicating that Etios was put on the Indian roads after some extensive tests which included test driving the car through 200,000 km across the country.

The 1.5 lt petrol version of Etios has five variants with price ranging from Rs 4.96 lakh to Rs 6.87 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Etios is expected to give a mileage of 17.6 km a litre. The basic model of Etios, (J) however, does not come with an electric power steering or central locking features. But an official with Toyota-Kirloskar Motor (TKM) a joint venture with TMC, said that the absence of electric power steering in the basic model was hardly noticeable while driving in the car. Etios sedan is also one of the lightest cars in its category with the kerb weight ranging from 900 kg to 930 kg.

The hatchback version of Etios called, Etios Liva is expected to be launched in April and the combined sales of both the versions are expected to be about 70,000 units during 2011. The total sales of all Toyota models are expected to be about 1.4 lakh during the year.

Mr Toyoda admitted that car recalls had indeed affected the car maker but since then it had put in place several measures to make better quality cars. “We are listening to our customers more sincerely and more carefully now,” he said. He also ruled out plans to shift the production of a major portion of the cars from Japan because of the appreciation of the yen. He said any such moves could affect 2 lakh jobs in its Japanese plants. “We are a Japanese company and hence we do not want to shift production to other countries.” But he did admit that Toyota was in a dilemma and the appreciation of the currency was a ‘headache' for the company.

TKM's Managing Director, Mr Hiroshi Nakagawa, said about 150 dealers have been appointed in India for the rollout of the car in the country. He said the production of the Etios had started in TKM's new plant in which the company has invested about Rs 3,200 crore.

TKM's Deputy Managing Director, Mr Sandeep Singh, said that after India, Etios is expected to be produced in Brazil as well. He said with the entry of Etios, Toyota will participate in 48 per cent of the total car market in India.
