School closures Tuesday update

School closures Tuesday update : School closures - Tuesday update NEARLY 50 schools and nurseries in South and West Cumbria are keeping their doors shut today, following more snowfall overnight. The high number of closures comes as part of a white-out which has hit more than 80 schools, colleges and toddler groups across the whole of the county.

St James' Catholic Primary School in Millom and Cartmel Priory C of E Primary School were among the first to announce this morning that they will not be opening today. Broughton in Furness C of E Primary School, Chapel Street Infants & Nursery School in Dalton and Millom School soon added their names to the list of schools which will stay shut, along with Dowdales, Millom Infants' School and Roose Primary School in Barrow.

Captain Shaw's C of E Primary School in Bootle, Dalton St Mary's C of E Primary School in Dalton, John Ruskin School in Coniston and Park View Nursery school in Millom will not be opening, nor will Goodly Dale Primary School in Windermere, St Mary's Nursery and Infants School in Windermere or the Newbridge House Pupil Referral Unit in Barrow.

Haverigg Nursery School, St Cuthbert's Primary School in Windermere, Broughton Primary School and Thwaites School near Millom will stay shut along with Walney School, Burlington Primary School in Kirkby, Sandside Lodge School in Ulverston and Low Furness School in Great Urswick.

Victoria Junior School in Barrow, Windermere Junior School, Haverigg Primary School and St Bernard's Catholic High School in Barrow will remain closed, as will George Hastwell School on Walney, George Romney Junior School in Dalton, Flookburgh Primary School and Coniston Primary School.

Our Lady of the Rosary School in Dalton, Ormsgill Nursery and Primary School and Chetwynde School in Barrow have also shut after falling victim to the winter weather, along with Allithwaite C of E Primary School near Grange and Ireleth St Peter's C of E Primary.

Furness Academy, Yarlside Nursery and Primary School in Barrow, Black Coombe Junior in Millom, Askam Village School and Pennington C of E School in Ulverston are all closed, as are Ambleside C of E Primary School, Newton Primary School near Barrow, Grange Nursery and Primary School and Barrow Sixth Form College.

Ulverston Victoria High School has shut in spite of staff there spending around four hours yesterday trying to ensure students could attend today.

Roger Cahalin, assistant headteacher of the school, said: "It's snowing heavily now and another three inches have fallen overnight, so despite clearing and gritting the site and making it safe it's completely covered over again now.

"It (the decision to close the school) is based on safety. We're such a large site here, it's almost half a mile from one end to the other, so we have to have clear paths to make it safe. "It took about four hours for us to do that and sadly it's now covered over again."

Tots and toddlers are also enjoying "snow days" with Lindal Playgroup and Toddlers, the Spring Mount Toddler Group in Walney and the Jack and Jill Playgroup in Dalton all being called off.
