Npower customers will see their gas and electricity bills rise by 5.1% from 4 January pushing up the annual bill for a typical dual-fuel customer by £54, the firm said. A 50% rise in wholesale prices in the past 12 months was blamed for the tariff hike - its first for domestic customers in two years.
Npower’s decision leaves EDF and E.On as the only companies in the 'big six' not to have raised prices, but that situation may not last much longer.
E.On says it is monitoring the wholesale markets before making any decision, but would not raise prices before January. EDF has committed not to raise prices before March.
British Gas customers, meanwhile, will have to pay 7% more for their gas and electricity from tomorrow.
Audrey Gallacher, head of energy at Consumer Focus, said: "Npower customers will have been bracing themselves for this bad news after the increases from other firms, but that will not make them any less worried about affording their bills this winter.
