The problem began with payments on Wednesday night, but "most" of those payments have now been made, a spokesman for the bank told Dow Jones Newswires.
"But as a result of that, some payments which were supposed to be processed last night have been delayed and we're working on those now," the spokesman said. Many of the Wednesday night transactions were welfare payments from Centrelink, while many on Thursday were pay packets as this is a traditional pay day.
Extra work on the system has also disrupted electronic banking services such as Internet banking and automatic teller machines. The spokesman said he had been advised that the cause of the problem was a "corrupt file". "So it was a problem with a file rather than the system," he said.
The bank declined to give guidance as to when it expects systems to return to normal operations, other than to say: "We're making progress, and we're working day and night to get these transactions processed."
Affected customers should contact the bank, the spokesman said. "We don't want people to suffer a financial loss as a result of these delays. They should contact us and we'll work with them to rectify it." For the latest updates PRESS CTR + D or visit Stock Market news Today
