Coronation Street celebrates 50 years with a live episode

Coronation Street celebrates 50 years with a live episode ; Britain’s longest-running soap celebrates its 50th anniversary with a literal bang on Thursday night with a special live episode featuring a runaway tram careering onto the Weatherfield cobbles, cutting dramatically through the cast and their tangled plot lines alike.

From Nick and Leanne’s affair to the true paternity of Molly’s baby, in this episode long-festering secrets will be revealed and major characters culled. But perhaps more importantly, in celebrating the anniversary with a live episode, as EastEnders did earlier this year to mark its 25th birthday, Coronation Street is setting out to historic milestone.
Immediately after the tumultuous episode comes the second part of Coronation Street: 50 Years, 50 Moments, chosen by a long list of Weatherfield luminaries – including the show’s creator Tony Warren – and voted for by fans.

Many of the show’s storylines, we suddenly remember, were splashed across the tabloid headlines of the recent past, recalling both a golden age of British soaps and the special place Coronation Street has held in the national consciousness since the black-and-white cameras first panned across Weatherfield’s rooftops half a century ago.

Coronation Street Live is on ITV1 on Thursday 9 December at 8.00pm Coronation Street: 50 Years, 50 Moments is on ITV1 straight afterwards at 9.00pm
